Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick Swatches and Review

Press Sample | Self-Purchased

EDIT: I picked up Menace a few days after I posted this so I’ve moved it up and added the lip swatch. I’ve also added comparison swatches for the matte shades that are similar to some of their regular shades.

Y’all know I have a hard time resisting a new Urban Decay product launch! When I heard they were launching matte lipsticks I was suuuuper excited!

UD Matte Revolution Lipstick in Tilt, Menace, Bittersweet, and Blackmail

I received Blackmail in my goodie bag from the UD + Vogue Naked Smoky launch party and got to try it out for 2 weeks or so before the whole line launched and liked the formula enough to know I wanted moooore! I couldn’t get all of them (the downside to having a budget!) but I did pick up Bittersweet and Tilt which were the two other most unique shades in the line. I went back later and grabbed Menace. I also have swatches of them all! Click the photo below to see a larger version.

Swatches and Reviews for the shades I have

Tilt – “Matte bright orange.” I probably should have read the description on this one before I bought it. When swatched on my arm it looks like a lovely orangey coral but not a true orange. On my face though it really is bright orange. Not as orange as Bang, but still really obviously orange. Definitely not a color I’ll get a ton of wear out of but since I don’t have anything else like it it’s not a bad addition to my collection. The full face photo below is a little washed out but you can tell it’s very, very orange. I wore it for a Sunday afternoon BBQ with my neighbors and it fared remarkably well. It was comfortable for 6 hours or so at which point I had to touch it up a little bit (damn you, corn on the cob!) after which it wore beautifully for another 4 hours before I hit the hay.

Bittersweet – “Matte bright purple.” This is probably my favorite color from the whole line. I was expecting it to be a real purple but it pulls a little bit to the pinky side of the purple spectrum for me. It’s still my favorite though by a mile and a pretty unique shade! It’s also the most comfortable wear of the 3 shades for me. Beware though – it stains and will leave a bright fuchsia stain on your lips, hands, swatch arm, etc!

Blackmail – “Matte deep berry wine.” This came in the UD + Vogue goodie bag so I didn’t purchase it myself. It’s the kind of color that I oogle all the time and swatch constantly but would probably never have the guts to buy. That makes me extra happy to have received it – now it’s in my collection and when I need it, I’ve got it! That being said like Tilt it probably won’t be worn a ton as it’s definitely not the kind of shade I think I can pull off in the office! This one is less forgiving of dry spots on my lips and definitely needs a liner underneath but is pretty darn stunning. Forgive the odd full face photo below as I threw Blackmail on this evening for the sake of getting a full face with little regard to what was on the rest of my face.

Menace – “Matte medium fuchsia pink.” I originally skipped this one and had to go back and pick her up. She’s a gorgeous bright shocking pink. In loooove!

Descriptions of the rest

Stark Naked – “Matte light nude.” This is a pretty shade but I’m pretty sure my lips would disappear on my face with it and make me look a little sick. It’d be absolutely stunning on someone with a different skin tone though!

1993 – “Matte medium brown.” Ooooh how I love this shade on every. body. else! I keep thinking I want to go buy it and then I look at my KvD Lolita and remind myself that while this shade looks beautiful on my arm it would probably looks straight up brown on my face and a little too 1993 if you know what I mean? I’m all for a modern take on a retro look but I have no desire to look like I stepped right out of the 90s and my skintone just doesn’t play well with these shades. EDIT: I tested this at the UD Flagship and it’s not quite as brown as I was expecting. It didn’t come home with me but I may just have to put it on my wishlist.

Temper – “Matte bright orange-red.” I love this shade on my arm but things have a habit not only of pulling too brown on me (see 1993 above) but also of going too orange too quick. On a darker skin tone this shade would be downright hot but on me it would probably look like I accidentally chose the wrong shade of red in poor lighting and ended up “accidentally” orange-red instead of intentionally so.

Bad Blood – “Matte deep red.” I have so much love for this color! She would’ve come home with me if I didn’t already have Gash and need to watch my budget. So, so, so gorgeous and I’d wager that it’s the kind of red that’ll play well on practically anybody. I think Gash is a little darker, 69 is a little pinker, and F-Bomb is a little oranger so Bad Blood is the most smack dab RED.

After Dark – “Matte medium-dark berry pink.” Every time I walk by a UD display I have to swatch After Dark. I just adore it soooo much! Then I remind myself that it’s so darn close to Venom which I already have. It’s seriously gorgeous and I think the matte finish brings so much to the shade that the glossier finish of Venom doesn’t have.

Shade Comparisons

A number of these new matte shades are very similar to shades in their regular line. In fact, some of the shades are similar enough that the signage at Ulta lists them together.

As you can see here Matte Menace has Anarchy listed with it, Matte After Dark is paired with Venom, and both Matte Temper and Matte Tilt are paired with Bang. I’ve got some comparison swatches below to help with this.

UD Revolution Lipstick Comparisons - Pinks and Purples

UD Revolution Lipstick Comparisons – Pinks and Purples. Top to bottom: Matte After Dark, Venom, Matte Menace, Anarchy, Matte Blackmail, Shame.

As you can see here Matte After Dark and Venom are practically the same shade (at least close enough that it’s hard to tell once on the lips) and the biggest difference is the finish and pigmentation with the matte one being smoother. Same with Matte Menace and Anarchy. I swatched Matte Blackmail next to Shame just out of curiosity and they’re definitely very very different.

UD Revolution Lipstick Comparisons - Oranges

UD Revolution Lipstick Comparisons – Oranges. Top to bottom: Matte Tilt, Bang, Matte Bad Blood, Matte Temper.

Here Bang is swatched between Matte Tilt and Matte Bad Blood with Matte Temper below. I don’t think these are as close to dupes as the two pairs above. Tilt is much more coral and Bad Blood is more of a red-orange while Bang is true bright orange.
