June 2015 Vanishing Cabinet – “Beyond the Goblin City”

Notoriously Morbid one of my favorite indie brands. Their monthly Vanishing Cabinet subscription is $12.90 per month and usually includes 4-5 eyeshadow minis, another product like a lip gloss or blush, and a sample of one of the shades from the next month’s VC. They also give a discount code for your next purchase in their shop. You can check out my past Vanishing Cabinet reviews here.

June’s VC theme was “Beyond the Goblin City” and was based on the movie Labyrinth. It was one of my favorite movies growing up and is still a favorite of mine. I pop it in every so often when I’m feeling like a little fantasy and some David Bowie music. I squee’d pretty hard core when I saw the theme hint in May’s VC.

Don’t Defy Me – This shade defies description. It’s like… I think it’s got a smokey purpley base with a teal and green duochrome sparkle. It screams Jareth’s masquerade outfit. I love it, but I’m starting to feel like purple/red bases with green duochrome are sooooo common these days in the makeup world. In the photos it looks like more of a grape base but up close in person it’s a redder purple. It required a bit of building up to get full pigmentation.

Noble Sirs – I want to call this chameleon color somewhere between a lavender and a cornflower with pinky shimmer. I think maybe this is a reference to Sir Didymus but the color isn’t quite like anything on him… maybe closest to his hat but that was much darker. Anyway I think the shade is gorgeous! I’d bet it’ll pull more blue or more purple based on what else you wear with it. It required a little more building up that some of the other shades.

You Have No Power – Very light crystalline pink with silver white shimmer. The pink is so delicate here that it’s easy to mistake it for being an off-white. It’s like Sara’s dress in the masquerade scene… So beautiful!

Say Your Right Words – This looked like a taupey brown with red shimmer in the jar (and it photographs that way, unfortunately) and I wasn’t all that thrilled but once applied in person it’s a beautiful smokey dusty base with a nice burgundy sheen. Definitely better in person than on camera.

The World Falls Down – Notoriously Morbid’s first solid perfume, this is a beautiful floral. The only individual note my nose can pick out is some jasmine maybe? It’s a little on the sweet side but I don’t detect any obvious gourmand notes. It wears pretty true on my skin and doesn’t shift a whole lot. I absolutely adore it and am going to have to hoard this little guy as long as I can. They did a limited release of full sizes but they sold out in minutes before I could snag one.

Fire Gang (Corvus Cosmetics) – This was this month’s guest indie. Somewhere between a peach and a flamingo pink with gold, copper, and pink sparkles. Based on the bright oranges and pinks of the Fire Gang, I think this is one of my favorite shades this month! It’s also the most pigmented shade.

Personally I feel like they executed really well on the theme this month. I’ve read a few other reviews that were a bit confused by it but it totally made sense to me and I love it! A few of the shadows were a little thin on pigmentation but they did build up nicely. I’m pretty happy with it. It’s rare that I can put together a cohesive look with all of the products in a VC and I think you can totally do that with these which I like. I realize that that makes it more hit or miss with people – if the shades all play nicely together but they’re not your niche then the whole VC is a miss for you where if they’re more vastly different you have more chance of getting hits. That being said this whole VC is a hit for me so I’m happy! I wish they’d make the perfume permanent though.
