Vanishing Cabinet May 2015 “The Price Of Magic”

Notoriously Morbid one of my favorite indie brands. Their monthly Vanishing Cabinet subscription is $12.90 per month and usually includes 4-5 eyeshadow minis, another product like a lip gloss or blush, and a sample of one of the shades from the next month’s VC. They also give a discount code for your next purchase in their shop. You can check out my past Vanishing Cabinet reviews here.

May’s subscription was inspired by Once Upon a Time! I seriously love the themes they come up with! They took April off from the Vanishing Cabinet to get caught up on things so that May’s VC would ship out on a better schedule. Unfortunately that didn’t really seem to work and it still shipped out pretty late. Honestly though even the more mainstream subscriptions I have don’t always ship out the day I get billed so waiting a week for it to go out doesn’t bother me too much. It seemed to me like the delay decreased by a few days if not by as much as we were all hoping for. Despite the extra prep time though there were typos in the info card that were crossed out by hand, weird spacing and font issues, and characters that didn’t print properly so it still feels kind of rushed and off.

Misthaven – “A forest green with blue overlay and shimmer, like glancing through the Looking Glass.” This is a minty sagey green with blue shimmer. I was expecting it to be one of my least favorite shades but it turned out to be my most favorite of the eye shadows. It also applied more smoothly than the rest.

Dearie – “A gold like no other; the vibrant, green hued sparkles in this metallic shadow bestows a magical aura even Rumple would be proud of.” This is a green toned gold and is probably my least favorite shade but it does apply pretty well compared to the next two on the list. I think it takes after Rumple pretty darn well though so even though it’s not my cup of tea they did a great job with it!

You Want Darkness? – “A slate brown base with tons of purple, green and gold sparkle. *This shadow will deepen or lighten, depending on the primer/base used underneath.” To me it’s more of a purpley brown base and in theory I love the color itself but the application was a little patchy and had to be built up.

Always the Queen – “The perfect metallic ruby red with hints of royal purple peeking through.” I adore the color this is in the jar but once applied it became more of a copper. This may be one that needs a different base though I generally find that sticky bases only enhance the color of that sheen and take away from the base color so I may not be able to pull that more purpley red out of it. We’ll just have to play with it and see. It was also a little patchy and thin when applying and needed to be built up a bit.

Happy Ending – This was from Dark Heart Designs and is the guest indie sample for the month. It’s a pretty peachy blush and is quite pigmented. The sample packaging put me off a little bit though. The lid label is apparently printed on but it looks like it was sharpied on and then rubbed off – it’s not even really recognizable as a heart and looks a little unprofessional. That being said the product inside is what matters most and I like it!

Wicked Heart Diablo Lip Rouge – “Wicked Heart is a deep warm red with purple shimmer. (This Diablo was made permanent by many customer requests!)” This is a lovely burgundy/berry with a purple duochrome and I LOVE IT! Seriously so beautiful! I love the fact that they listened to us and made it permanent!

Overall I think they executed well on the theme this month. The shadow qualities were mixed with two being pigmented and applying nicely and the other two being patchy and thin. The Diablo Lip Rouge is probably my favorite item in this VC and will definitely get loved to death so I’m super happy it’s permanent now. Time will tell if the shipping and scheduling stuff with the VC resolves. Unfortunately I’ve been out of town for the arrivals of both my June and July VCs and haven’t really been watching the time line. Here’s to catching up on things!
