Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet – January 2015 Swatches & Review

Self-Purchased

My very first Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet arrived almost 2 weeks ago! I’ve had some time to play with my new pretties and I now present them to you for review!

If you’re interested in getting the Vanishing Cabinet, check out the Notoriously Morbid website and follow them on Facebook for updates. There are only a limited number of subscription slots available so you’ll need to watch them carefully!

This month’s VC is Jem and the Holograms themed! My inner 80’s child squealed the second I opened the package! I absolutely love the Jem style branding on these! Jem was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I used to make my mom rent the VHS sets a Blockbuster all the time! Yes, I said “rent”, “VHS”, and “Blockbuster” all in one sentence… I’m getting old!

Notoriously Morbid January 2015 Vanishing Cabinet. Top: Pureheart. Middle: Starlight (lipcraft gloss), Showtime, Rebel, Headstrong. Bottom: Enticing Elba, Show’s Over.

This month’s VC contained 5 mini sized eyeshadows in Pureheart, Showtime, Rebel, Headstrong, and Show’s Over, 1 mini lip craft lip gloss in Starlight, and 1 sample baggie of Enticing Elba a shade from the upcoming February VC.

Swatch time! I have to admit that I’m still learning the best application methods for indie pigments. The eyeshadow swatches below are swatched over Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion which I’ve found really isn’t a good base for these kinds of pigments. Check below under each color’s description for individual swatches over the Nyx Milk pencil which is what I’ve had the best luck with as a base for these.

January 2015 Vanishing Cabinet Swatches. Left to right: Starlight Lip Craft Gloss, Showtime, Rebel, Pureheart, Show’s Over, Headstrong, Enticing Elba.

Starlight Lip Craft Lip Gloss – This was my first NM Lip Craft and I like the formula; there isn’t much of a scent, it glides on smoothly, and wears comfortably for me. The color is a pale and sheer pink with a bit of golden shimmer. It’s a gorgeous shade in the tube and when swatched thickly on my wrist it’s gorgeous but on my lips it’s hardly noticeable unless I lay it on too thickly for comfort. By itself I wouldn’t wear it much but it is really pretty layered on top of other lip products!

Showtime – Showtime is a really bright and vibrant pink with subtle pink and purple sparkles. The arm swatch above doesn’t even begin to do it justice! It’s a light enough shade that on my skin tone it has to be used over a white base or it washes out.

Rebel – Rebel is Showtime’s darker, redder sister. It’s almost a rusty red and has a green shimmer to it. The effect is similar to Kat von D’s On the Road though that is a more red-brown base while this is more of a rust red base and the duochrome on this is more subtle. Unfortunately the green shift did not seem to photograph for me at all.

Pureheart – Pureheart is pure purple and very irridescent with pinky purple sparkles! This is one of my favorite colors out of the bunch. Lots of reviewers had issues with the performance of this shadow. I did have a significant amount of fading when I wore it, but I wore it over UDPP and not over the Nyx Milk base. I’ve yet to try it over a more effective base.

Show’s Over – Show’s Over is supposed to be a slightly warm purple but I swear it pulls blueish to my eyeballs with purple sparkles. My jar didn’t have as much product as the other shades, but I wear blueish shadows infrequently so I’m not really bothered. This color is so perfectly 80’s though!

Headstrong – Headstrong is a bright teal with a slight gray cast and pink and purple sparkles. I don’t wear green or teal shadows but this is so gorgeous I have to find a reason/way to wear it!

Enticing Elba – Enticing Elba is a preview color for next month’s VC and it’s a gorgeous cornflower blue with a coppery shift. I can’t wait to get the jar next month!
