December "Decked Out" Birchbox

December “Decked Out” Birchbox

Birchbox’s theme for December is “Decked Out.” It’s designed to kick off the season of celebration with “festive” samples. It contains the standard 5 samples, all sample sized, as well as a $10 gift code for GAP.

COOLA Tinted Matte SPF 30 for face – This is a mineral tinted moisturizer that’s supposed to help even tone while giving good sun protection with a matte finish. My tube wasn’t sealed properly and seems pretty empty but I should get a use or two out of it. The full size is $36.00 for 1.7 oz so this .17 oz sample is worth about $3.60.

English Laundry Signature for Her – This fragrance is described as, “Inspired by English gardens” and as balancing, “floral and woodsy notes.” I’m intrigued by this scent description! The 1.7 oz size retails for $70 and the 3.4 oz retails for $90 which is $20 extra for double the quantity… seems odd to me and makes estimating the sample value difficult. Sample vials like this are usually about 1 ml so let’s estimate this at about $0.90 – 1.40.

Lord & Berry Paillettes Glitter Eye Pencil in Black – This is a black eyeliner with a tiny bit of silver glitter. It looks in the pencil like there’s a lot of glitter but that’s not the way it looks on the skin, it’s a fairly subtle glitter. The full size liner is $18 for 0.04 oz so this 0.01 oz pencil is worth about $4.50.

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel – This is an acid-free peel meant to exfoliate for softer and brighter skin and is supposed to help with acne control, reducing dark spots, and smoothing skin. I probably won’t use this very soon as I’m in the middle of a bad breakout cycle and am limiting my use of new skincare products until it’s under control but I’m excited to give this a shot once I’m able to. The full size is $48 for 1.7 oz so this .17 oz sample is worth $4.80.

TOCCA Crema de Mano in Cleopatra – I was intrigued by the Cleopatra scent description for a long time and finally smelled the perfume in Sephora and realized that the fragrance just wasn’t right for me. I like this hand cream though. It’s not the same fragrance as the perfume at all and is quite relaxing so I’m happy to have this. The full size is listed on the card as $10 but on the website as $20 and is 4 oz. Using the site price that makes the 1 oz sample worth $5.

The sample value in this box is $18.80 – 19.30 which alone is a little low compared to the boxes I’ve received the last few months but the $10 GAP offer brings the whole box to nearly $30 which is about par. While I’m not absolutely thrilled by any one item in this box, I’m not disappointed either. It’s a decent box and is a good value for the cost.
